Adjusting the Mallory Model A Distributor YL11A2

this is part of a conversation i followed over at the Fordbarn.com regarding Mallory YL11A2 Distributors...

Setting the timing with a Mallory distributor is fairly easy.. The easiest way is when the timing pin drops in place, where ever the rotor tip is pointing will be number one time. The distributor can easily be rotated as in modern cars and set the plug wires as needed. The firing order is 1243 . I tune mine by ear, some buy a kit and use a timing light . I set mine as advanced as I can without starter kickback when cranking and no timing knocks. A little tweaking or rotating as needed with the timing will get er done, works for me. Usually the rotor tip ends up pointing where number 4 would normally be. If you want number one timing to be where it would be with the model A distributor , it will be more complicated. You will need to remove the valve cover and the oil pump and distributor drive assembly. With the drive assembly removed, you can stick a long straight blade screwdriver down through the head and down to the oil pump and turn the pump as needed for the drive assembly to align as necessary for the rotor to align as wanted. The points cam isn't adjustable on the Mallory distributors.

The only part that I have ever needed with my Mallory distributors was the condenser. I am using Ford V8 condensers with mine., the same condenser used with the so called modern points that the model A venders sell.. Bubbas ignition has Mallory parts but I don't have an address or phone number.

I got my first Mallory distributor from Harrys model A parts in Oregon in the early 90s . Harry told me that They had run these distributors for over 30.000 miles without having to do anything. Mine have been trouble free. This is the distributor that was used in the dyno tests with the Brumfield heads back in the ninties. The dual point Mallory was shown to give horsepower increases at low to mid RPM range. I had installed float-A-motor mounts in the coupe and there was quiet a bit of cl;utch chatter when taking off. After installing the Mallory distributor, the chatter went away completely. I was talking to Ken Miller and he felt that the Mallory distributor advanced so smoothly that it removed the chatter. Just an example of the smoothness of the advance.

Daily Driver Distributor, shown below, is available from us: CW rotation, points, centrifugal advance, 6 or 12 volt, rust color cap and ready to run. It sells here for $76.50 (no coil). This unit works very well for touring and daily driving. It comes with a second set of points and a pair of and a second pair of advance springs to better reach the proper advance curve for bangers. If maximum performance is required then I suggest the FSI VW unit.
For those of you wanting something a bit more, I suggest that you contact FSI Ignitions. They have an Electronic VW version that is best suited for those of you needing more advance, performance curve and spring control. fsignitions@cableone.net or call Mel at 580-762-8322
Distributor (points type) - Optional at $76.50 Complete + ship. Wires not included.
Buyers need to obtain one of these inexpensive VW distributors. The options are huge (a good thing). You'll find points and electronic, advance curve kits, vacuum and centrifugal advance, high speed balanced rotors, hi energy spark systems, Magnetos and conversion kits and caps of all kinds. Brands include FSI, Mallory, Bosch, MSD, Empi, PRO, Pertronix and several other major aftermarket brands. There is a profusion of websites to Google and Ebay listings that discuss these distributors and their advantages and possible upgrades.
VW distributors generally run from $80 for new centrifugal advance points units and $100 to $200 for electronic and up to $400 for ball bearing jobs. We have internal replacement advance springs that get you to about 32 degrees advance.
NOTE: Any clockwise four banger distributor that has its shank, shaft and tang machined to VW specs (below) will fit. Next image is a print to work from. . . Most aftermarket manufactures carry a ready-made VW distributor. Units with a larger housing will have more adjustability (weights can move farther out) than the "009" models.
Measurements are in millimeters.

26 Degree Only in Racing Environments

The only change was moving the spark plug wires from over-the-valves to the left side. This resulted in 1.5 HP increase at 2500 rpm.  We recommend, for street use, timing to be set at 28 degree advance. We are recommending 26 degrees only in racing environments where idle is not an issue and rpms over 3000 are used.

Vintage Ford Model B engine is Alive & Well in our Depression Era Big Car

Vintage Ford Model B engine is Alive & Well in our Depression Era Big Car

Posted by admin December - 13 - 2011 - Tuesday
I am happy to report that the long awaited return of our Ford Model B race engine to our Depression Era Big Car is now complete. The engine is installed and running great. The new engine carries great oil pressure, consistent compression of 115-120psi. and no sign of any coolant leaks. We plan to do a bit of additional tuning and then add the cowling back on the car. As you can see from the following images, this car carries an on-board battery, starter, and mini alternator to make getting the car to and from events easy.

I have also included a close up photo of the Ford factory replacement block Diamond Casting mark on the engine block.
Because most of the car’s internal features are visible at this time, I have added photos of the vintage 1928 Franklin steering components, front and rear suspension detail, and on-board battery box.
